STORIES IN SOLITUDE
A Project in Visual Anthropology
ABOUT THE PROJECT
As part of a visual anthropology course, I started this project as a means to explore the displacement I personally felt in terms of identity, belonging, and community resulting from living thousands of miles away from places and people I considered home. Now, in the post-COVID-19 world of social distancing, it is more than evident that I am not alone in such experiences. People all over have had their lives reshaped, whether because they are stranded away from their family and friends, or because they cannot find routine while stuck in the confines of the same four walls, or worst of all, because they have borne the economic consequences that have accompanied this pandemic. We are all displaced, albeit in different capacities, and that is something that has brought people together online in the most extraordinary of circumstances.

Stories in Solitude is an attempt to build a collection of thoughts and experiences from people around the globe dealing with these sudden changes, and to form a collective narrative of the multitude of ways to cope with them. It is about finding comfort in shared anxieties, building a sense of normalcy through expressing routines, and renewing hope that the world keeps on going. There is a journal entry every day from a new person willing to share their story, the content of which is also considered in the ethnographic filmmaking of this project.
